 Serial Numbers and Dates

This page lists and describes known American Standard  basses for serial numbers 1000 - 1999. When possible, descriptions, pictures, and general/historical info about those basses is included. These dates, although mostly correct or very close to correct, are not 100% verifiable.

Note: American Standard basses in the 1000-1999 serial number range are more rare for no apparent reason other than perhaps that range was selected soley for use in the 1940s when production was put on hold during the war.

Serial # Year Description and History
1345 1946 Honey brown or maybe blonde, thoroughly checked and completely worn to the wood by someone's belly on the upper bass bout. Fingerboard is rosewood or low-grade ebony, the tailpiece is ebony and the tuners are brass. Purchased in Orange Co., CA in 2002 for $600. Previously owned by a jazz musician and teacher, it's had an amateur neck reset and "looks as if it was dragged down the road chained to a pickup truck".

Currently (as of 12.06.2005) owned by David Scott of Las Vegas, NV

1392 1946 Mid- or dark- brown color w/ pinstripes and brand in perfling heart on back. Bought by Penn State University in 1943 and likely a 1941 model. (Note: I've heard this bass and its a boomer with a warm tone. --Kip)

Currently (as of 12.01.2005) owned by Matthew Madden of KY.

1673 1948 Purchased in August 2004 from Harry and Jeannie West's shop in Statesville, NC. In excellent condition. Ascertained and confirmed to have belonged to a member of Bill Monroe's Bluegrass Boys prior to finding its way into Harry's shop. A brown-burst in excellent shape. Fingerboard appears to be screwed on and doweled professionally. New endpin, tailpiece wire, and bridge, but otherwise all original equipment.

Currently (as of 12.01.2005) owned by Sully of Pat and Sully Stephens, in MD.

1692 1948 A blonde refin, back has lots of checking, making it look kind of original. Bought from someone who said they got it from Stein on Vine in Los Angeles. Original neck and tuners with a low grade ebony fingerboard--a replacement. Neck is screwed and dowled but stable.

Doesn't say "Made by Cleveland Musical Instruments" and it doesn't have the burned in American Standard on the inside. It's only on the back just below the neck joint.

Currently (as of 12.01.2005) owned by Rob Menapace of Los Angeles CA.

1734 1948 Brown sunburst, in really good condition with interesting neck repair work. New neck? it appears to be original and the tuning keys fit as if original. Stamped on back, rosewood board, brass tuners. Still hunting for data on this bass.

Currently (as of 12.013.2005) owner unknown.

1997 1949 Original (reddish brown) finish, black stripe intact. Neck is original. Purchased from Russ Botten of Vancouver B.C.
